MNZ: The New Yorker June 9 & 16, 2008
New Yorker's boring for the most part, as usual, but they had a nice explanation of the T-Pain vocoder thing and how it works. Apparently, the oil industry gave us the Auto Tunes vocoder phenomenon, by accident. I always thought it was going back to Roger Troutman and Zapp, but apparently this shit didn't even exist, at least in this form, until the '90s, and first got used by Cher. I feel bad for T-Pain though, because motherfuckers ran that shit through the grinder, which will make him sound even more played out next time he has an album out.
I guess the New Yorker did some flamboyant stupid covers that got all sorts of media coverage, but the internet's like 1000 times faster than me, so everyone's probably already figured all that shit, refigured out, over-analyzed, and moved on. Which means in about four weeks, I'll find a copy in the milk crates at the library.
